The 93 Giants rode the back of Giants fixture Will Clark to turn back
the 83 Braves in four exciting games. Outside of the shutdown pitching
of creaky knuckleballer Phil Niekro in Game Three, the Giants bats were a
bit too much for the scrappy Atlanta squad:
Game One: Giants' ace John Burket goes 7.2 shutout innings and is helped by a three-for-five day from Clark (who scores one and drives in one). While the Giants cannot muster any extra base hits off Braves' starter Craig McMurtry, they are also aided by four Braves errors. Giants 4, Braves 0.
Game Two: The Giants and Braves both score two runs in the second (one on a Clark homer), and Braves add one in the third on a scorching Chris Chambliss double off Giants starter Bill Swift to take a 3-2 lead. The Braves punch another run across in the sixth on a massive Bob Horner blast to left to make it 4-2, behind the solid pitching of Pascual Perez.
But Giants SS Royce Clayton -- not exactly a big power source -- ruins Perez's outing, belting a two run homer in the eighth to tie it up at four apiece. The Giants scratch home a run in the top of the ninth, as Robby Thompson singles home pinch runner Paul Faries, and Rod Beck gets his first save. Giants 5, Braves 4.
Game Three: Oldtimers Night in San Francisco, as 46-year-old Phil Niekro pitches a
complete game shutout for the Braves, striking out seven while only
allowing one walk and eight hits, giving the Braves renewed hope for the
series. Horner drives in three for much of the scoring damage off the
Giants' aging starter, 36-year-old southpaw Bud Black. Game Four: The Giants trot out another wily vet, 37-year-old Scott Sanderson, and gets better results this time around. Sanderson starts rocky, giving up a three run homer in the first to Chambliss, but the Giants answer right back with a three run homer in the bottom of the first by Clark off Braves game one starter Craig McMurtry. The game remains tied at three until the bottom of the eighth, when the Giants strike for two off the Braves' Donnie Moore.
Clark, natch, hits the clutch blow, a single plating Darren Lewis for the eventual game winner. Beck gives up a solo blast in the ninth to Dale Murphy but hangs on for his second series save. Giants 5, Braves. 4.
A great series between two longtime NL West rivals. Jim Mott and I had no issues with head to head play; it ran very well.
