“Mauch-Won”: ‘64 Phightin’s Sweep ‘76 A’s

 

Game 1
Dick Bosman vs Chris Short
 
Phillies CF Tony Gonzalez opened the bottom of the 1st with a lead off 342' solo homer to give the Phils a 1-0 lead. Oakland threatened in the 2nd by loading the bases but a Dick Bosman squeeze was unsuccessful when Phils catcher Clay Dalrymple fielded the bunt and got the force at home. The threat was over when Bill North grounded out to the the inning. Short cruised to the 6th when the A's put 2 on but they couldn't get anyone across. Ed Roebuck pitched the 8th but ran out of gas with 2 out in the 9th. Bobby Shantz came in and got the save by striking out Larry Haney.

Game 2
Stan Bahnsen vs Jim Bunning
 
Philly came out of the gate strong with a Dick Allen 2 run home run and a Clay Darymple solo shot to grab a 3-0 advantage early. The Phils added 1 in the 2nd when Ruben Amaro scored on a Tony Gonzalez double giving Philly a 4-0 lead. Philly put it out of reach with a 3 run 4th and Jim Bunning cruised to a 7-1 complete game win over the A's.

Game 3
Dennis Bennett vs Vida Blue
 
The series moves to Oakland where the A's hope to get their bats going and get some runs across the plate. The Phils opened the scoring in the 3rd on a Gus Triandos 2 run homer off Vida Blue. The Phils added 1 in the 5th When Triandos singled in Danny Cater to make it 3-0 Philly. Oakland made a game of it in their half of the 5th when Gene Tenace tied it up with a 3 run blast down the left field line. The score remained tied until the 7th when Gus Triandos once again drove in a run collecting his 4th RBI of the game and giving Philly a 4-3 lead that they were able to hold on to for the rest of the game.
